A suspension-type bridge was selected to cross the Chattahoochee River with a clear span. The bridge includes a deck that is hung below a series of suspension cables with vertical suspenders that carry the weight of the deck and two slender steel towers. The bridge will be visually appealing in the context of the surrounding national park due to its undulating shapes and graceful curved profile. The timber walking surface will allow for a lighter support structure and give the bridge a rustic feel that is consistent with the overall appearance of the park. The pier supports are expected to be manufactured in steel, which will allow off-site fabrication and expedited installation, minimizing impact to the terrain and vegetation. Transparent railings will include the use of wood for the top rail to provide a rustic look and visual warmth. The new suspension bridge will become a critical link between the East and West Palisades sections of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
