The 1904 historic Como Park pedestrian bridge is a fully rehabilitated asset in Saint Paul’s Como Park. The three-span, open spandrel, reinforced concrete barrel arch is an early example of the Melan-arch structural system. The bridge’s new historic balustrades were slightly modified from the originals to comply with AASHTO guidelines. New paths were built under and over the bridge to reconnect it to the park circulation system. Interpretive signage was added to inform the public of the bridge’s engineering legacy, original purpose, and setting. The public uses it as an overlook while also appreciating its historic significance and architectural quality. Sensitively designed aesthetic lighting has been added under the main arch to enhance its appearance at night.
