The new Gut Bridge replacement consists of a bascule bridge with an innovative lifting mechanism that utilizes efficient, low-maintenance hydraulic cylinders. The small scale of the bridge towers and hangers fits in perfectly with the historic coastal fishing village of South Bristol and its marine environment. The new bridge provides more clearance than the existing swing bridge in both open and closed positions, reducing the number of openings per year. The bridge incorporates two traffic lanes and an ADA-compliant sidewalk. The entire steel structure was manufactured off-site and brought to the channel via barge. The bridge design’s elegant profile and overall slenderness enhances the views of and from the water.
