Massachusetts Department of Conservation & Recreation, MA

For several decades the cities of Boston and Cambridge have lacked a pedestrian connection along the Charles River’s Esplanade adjacent to the Museum of Science complex. This new pedestrian bridge will link existing parks on both sides of the river. To fit into the site, the bridge will be curved in plan with cables in a radial pattern supporting the deck from one side only and from a single inclined tower. The cable-stayed clear span over the water will connect to the museum’s walkway system. The tower will match the height of existing buildings and the anchor cables’ inclination will complement the roof shape of an adjacent historic boathouse. Both pedestrians and bicyclists will have a clear view of Boston’s Back Bay and the river. The bridge will gently slope to allow required navigation clearances and connect to an elevated walkway that will serve as a connection between the two cities.
