The new crossing of Interstate 265 over the Ohio River between Indiana and Kentucky features an elegant and unusual cable-stayed bridge. The bridge deck includes a wide pedestrian and bicycle trail. The bridge has two needle towers with architecture reminiscent of the recreational boats on the water. By introducing a variable-depth box superstructure that takes the loads directly to the towers, the stay cables next to the towers can be omitted, making the bridge transparent. A series of openings between opposing traffic decks allows sunlight to reach the water, reducing the wide deck’s mass. The bridge integrates well into the beautiful landscape due to its simplicity, elegance, and uncluttered underside.
