A part of the Boston, Massachusetts, Central Artery/Tunnel Project, the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge is one of the widest cable-stayed bridges in the world and the only asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge in the United States. The bridge carries ten lanes of traffic: eight interstate lanes passing through the towers and two local traffic lanes cantilevered on the east side, outside the towers. The towers recall the shape of the historic Bunker Hill Monument in neighboring Charlestown, while the bridge’s overall form echoes the shape of the sailboats that navigate the inner Charles River Basin and Boston Harbor. The bridge is a striking addition to the Boston skyline and a new symbol of the city.
